How to use this calculator
Choose the direction of the FOV you know. Enter its angle in degrees and your display width-to-height ratio, such as 16 and 9.
The math behind it
Vertical FOV = 2 × atan(tan(horizontal FOV ÷ 2) ÷ aspect) Horizontal FOV = 2 × atan(tan(vertical FOV ÷ 2) × aspect) Aspect = width ÷ height
A worked example
A horizontal FOV of 90° at 16:9 corresponds to a vertical FOV of about 58.715507°.
Assumptions & precision
Rectilinear perspective, centered view and square pixels. Angles must be greater than 0° and less than 180°. Games may define their sliders differently; this does not map engine-specific settings. Very extreme ratios that cannot be represented accurately are rejected. Display rounds to 6 decimals.
A common question
Why is horizontal FOV larger on a wide screen?
At the same viewing distance, a wider viewport spans a larger angle. FOV conversion uses tangent and arctangent, not a direct multiplication of angles.
