How to use this calculator
Enter the subtotal before tax, tax rate, tip percentage and number of people. Choose whether the tip applies to the subtotal or subtotal plus tax. The calculator splits the resulting total equally. Currency is a display preference and does not apply exchange rates.
The math behind it
Tax = subtotal × tax rate ÷ 100 Tip = selected tip basis × tip percentage ÷ 100 Total = subtotal + tax + tip Per person = total ÷ people
A worked example
A 100 subtotal with 10% tax and a 20% pre-tax tip totals 130, or 65 each for 2 people. Applying that tip after tax gives a tip of 22 and a total of 132, or 66 each.
Assumptions & precision
Equal shares only. Enter amounts excluding any already-added tax or gratuity to avoid double counting. Rates are provided by you, not inferred from location. Subtotal and rates must be finite and nonnegative, and people must be a positive safe whole number. Intermediate totals are unrounded and capped at 10¹⁵. Displayed currency amounts use standard minor units; rounded shares or components may not add up exactly, so adjust the final payment as needed. No per-person item allocation or local tax rules are applied.
A common question
Should I tip before or after tax?
The calculator supports either choice and makes the basis explicit. Select the option you intend to use; it does not assume a local rule or tipping custom.
