The math behind it
Required final % = (target × 100 − current × (100 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
A worked example
With 85% before a final worth 40%, a target of 90% requires (90 × 100 − 85 × 60) ÷ 40 = 97.5% on the final.
Assumptions & precision
The final is the only remaining assessment. Current grade, target and exam weight are from 0% to 100%; no extra credit is assumed. If the final has 0% weight, it cannot change the grade. A required score at or below 0% is shown as 0% needed; above 100% is flagged as unachievable. Results show up to 6 decimal places. Values within 0.000000001 percentage points of 0% or 100% are treated as that boundary to avoid floating-point noise. Extremely large required results above 10¹⁵ are rejected.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?
The target is not achievable with the final alone under these assumptions. The calculator does not assume extra credit, a curve or additional assignments.
