How to use this calculator
Enter start and end times. For an overnight interval, select Ends next day. Enter unpaid break minutes to subtract. Native time controls follow your device’s 12-hour or 24-hour format; the calculation uses whole minutes.
The math behind it
Elapsed minutes = end clock minutes − start clock minutes + (next day ? 1,440 : 0) Net minutes = elapsed minutes − unpaid break Decimal hours = net minutes ÷ 60
A worked example
09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute unpaid break gives 480 minutes, or 8 hours. 22:00 to 06:00 the next day with the same break gives 7.5 hours.
Assumptions & precision
Each interval must be from 0 to 24 hours. Equal times mean zero hours unless Ends next day is selected, in which case they mean 24 hours. Breaks are nonnegative whole minutes and cannot exceed the interval. Clock times are validated internally as HH:mm. No seconds, dates, time zones, daylight-saving adjustment or payroll rounding. Decimal hours display up to 6 decimal places.
A common question
Will this adjust a shift across daylight saving time?
No. It subtracts clock readings only. Use actual elapsed time from your records if clocks changed during the shift.
