How to use this calculator
Enter total hours, regular hourly rate, the hours after which overtime begins, and the overtime multiplier. Use the same period for total hours and threshold. Currency changes display only. The example threshold and multiplier are not a determination of applicable rules.
The math behind it
Regular hours = min(total hours, threshold) Overtime hours = max(total hours − threshold, 0) Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier
A worked example
45 hours at 20 per hour, with overtime after 40 hours at 1.5×, gives 800 regular pay plus 150 overtime pay: 950 gross.
Assumptions & precision
A single user-selected threshold and multiplier for one period. Hours, rate and threshold must be finite and nonnegative; multiplier must be at least 1. A zero threshold treats all hours as overtime. No tax, deductions, daily overtime, multiple pay rates, exemptions or jurisdiction-specific rules. Results above 10¹⁵ or non-finite results are rejected. Currency display rounds only the final amounts, so displayed components may differ slightly from the total.
A common question
Does the default 40-hour threshold apply to everyone?
No. It is an example. Enter the threshold and multiplier relevant to your situation; this calculator does not determine eligibility or legal obligations.
